hi ive been tempted in the past to use full encrypted o/s programs and discs (like the linux options or 3rd party software on windows) but in truth i dont want the performance hit and i dont actually require full encryption for the entire o/s

Id like a good place to store cv`s/bank letters/passwords/work security access information and to be able to lock that folder so that without the password its not able to be viewed and by that I mean really solidly locked down.

is there any good software for windows that is supported? one that is not glitchy as i dont wish for a crashed app or ruined folder to permanently remove access to my files.

The types of files i wish to safe guard also would be useful if the folder was not tied to the o/s i.e copy folder to pen drive or network location and best of all unlockable on linux aswell as windows (cross platform software) although i acknowledged this might be asking a bit too much

of course i dont mind spending £30-50 if its decent and straight forward.

btw i do realise that i am more likely to have data digitally frauded than physically but id like to a least give myself a chance with both methods of protection

thanks for any help :)

TrueCrypt - free, secure (provided you use a decent password) and cross platform.

TrueCrypt stores all your files inside a container file (kind of like how a zip does) so it's very simple to move around. I've never done it but you can also encrypt your entire drive and require a password before it begins to boot windows etc.

/thread :p.

+1. TrueCrypt is one of the first applications I install on any new computer. You needn't worry about the level of security - they have thought of absolutely everything.
