What's a kernel panic and how do i fix it?

I run lubuntu and it was fine for ages but lately the laptop freezes and i get a boot screen showing kernel panic and something to do with it not syncing?

That's all i know, laptop freezes up and i get a black screen with white text saying kernel panic and some other stuff i doubt will be helpful.
