what's a wan port ?

Wide Area Network port.
If you're talking about a router/switch/modem etc then it's the port or interface that points out to the internet - the big wide world. Opposed to that are LAN ports - Local Area Network. These are used on your internal network and what you would attach your PC(s), network printer etc to.
 
Erm, possibly. More detail?

Would suspect the gateway's expecting an internet connection at the WAN port, and all the LAN on the LAN side. Identical to a cable router.
