can someone explain what exactly HD is and how much horsepower it takes up, because as far as i'm aware we're not running games in HD yet, whereas the ps3 is (due to blu ray), so also is it "harder" to run a higher res, rather than HD, or do soem resolutions "count as" HD .. i'm confused lol....

HD is just a standard set of resolutions. Google or Wikipedia can help you find the specifics.

PCs have been able to game in hi def for many years, but for current games at 1080p you'll need a good graphics card. With AA and AF too, a great graphics card is required.

HD video is a lot easier to display. A dual core processor of 2.0GHz or higher will find this easy. Some GFX cards can assist the processor, lowering CPU requirements.

Pretty much spot on.

PC's have been running in high-def for many many years, any resolution from 1280x1024 is as good as 720p, and personally I've been gaming at that or above for a good 6 years now.

The biggest hurdle with HD video content is being HDCP compliant, but as of yet, this isn't a requirement for HD DVD playback.

It's probably worth adding that 720p is 1280x720 and 1080i/p is 1920x1080. The p and i refer to how the picture is scanned - progressively vs. interlaced.

There are LCD's with native resolutions up to 2560x1600, capable of displaying 4 1280x800 windows, or 4 720p videos with space to spare!

HD DVD and BluRay simply provide the increased storage capacity required for high-def content. You can put high definition content on a CD or DVD, you just won't fit a full movie without compressing it.

Console games are usually presented in 720p rather than full 1080p. There are a couple of exceptions (Virtua Tennis, GT5) but even on the PS3 the majority of games still run at 720p.

They are rendered in 720p. Its nothing to do with the consoles but the game manufacturers. They may be upscaled and the PS3 WILL run at full 1080p with GT5 and Virtua Tennis, the 360 will run at 1080p with Virtua Tennis but otherwise the games are designed, rendered and graphically done in 720p.

PC games are different and can run at various resolutions.

halo 3 wasnt even mad in 720p it was 650p or something so its not actually classed as high definition
Correct.

And, as an Xbox 360 owner who plays in 720p, I'd like to echo the sentiment that HD gaming is nothing new if you've been gaming on the PC platform for God knows how many years, it's just the biggest marketing gimmick they could find now that consoles have caught up.

Actually almost all 360 and PS3 games are rendered in 720p and up scaled. Some 360 games including CoD4 and Halo 3 don't even render at 720p, so I'm afraid it is the 360 that is substandard.

Silly console wars. Quit throwing your stupid petty arguments around, especially in irrelevant places such as the graphics cards forum.

Your retort falls flat on its face simply because the CoD4 resolution issue applies to the PS3 version as well. Just a small fyi.

The PS3 GPU is not as advanced as the Xbox 360 GPU though as far as I'm aware. RSX is G71 (7900) based and Xenox is R500 (X1800) based, so any problem the Xbox 360 has the PS3 is going to have as well.

Xenox also has the benefit of unified shader architecture, which Nvidia chips at the time did not.

Not that I especially care, just had something relevent to add to the discussion. :p :)

On a slightly random sidenote, I was shocked to find yesternight, that I still find that games can look pretty in 640x480.

I was trying out Streammygame or whatever it's called, but it only allows you to show up to 640x480 without paying, putting Crysis on my laptop. Muaha. Works quite well.

[I run Crysis in 1600x1200 on my actual PC, though.]
[This isn't actually an advert. Sorry, have realised it does come out a bit like that, so changed it]
