I'm sitting here with an unopened Sony Walkman X series. I'm also sitting here with a Samsung i780 Winmo phone which I fancy changing. I'm tempted to return the X series and put the money towards a sim-free HTC Hero but what I'm not sure on is how good, or bad, Android phones are for mp3 and videos? Obviously it won't be quite as good as a dedicated mp3 player but any opinions on it would be good. Thanks.

Either get an ipod for your music or an iphone?
One of the major reasons i got one + I hated having to carry an adapter around with me!
I'd rather carry just one device rather than two if possible. Yes an iphone is an oiption but out of an iphone and an android phone I'd probably go with the android. Not sure yet though.
Or even better get a better mp3 player (iPods are notorious for being quite poor sound quality wise).
It will depend more on the devices hardware than software really, so tarring all android phones after experience with just one is a bad idea. All phones won't be up there with a dedicated mp3 player (depending on the mp3 player quality) however there are quite a few that are close enough to make no difference.
Does the Hero have a 3.5 mm jack? I think that's the most important feature to look for on a phone. The bonus of a smartphone however (with the exclusion of the iPhone, which as usual is crippled) is that you will be able to play far more formats on the phone, especially with something like Core Player (on WM devices anyway, I assume they will bring one out for android soon if they already haven't).
I have to say though, even with my HD, I still use my Walkman a lot of the time when not just nipping to the shops or going out for an afternoon, as the battery will last longer (also meaning you don't ware down the phone battery if your away for a few days) and it's just a little easier to change songs than the HD. I would suggest getting rid of the X series and getting the Hero (or similar phone) and an S-series Walkman. That way you have the best of both worlds.

Thought about it but really fancy the android OS, particularly the Hero, and just trying to decide whether it's ok for media or whether I'd still need a dedicated mp3 player. The Sony X series apparently floors the ipod with its sound quality but in all honesty it will be used for commuting so sound quality isn't the highest priority.
If I return the X series I can put that £179 towards a Hero.
Really? With my Shure SE110's and my Sennheiser PX100's the G1 plays music brilliantly.
