Well last week my car had its annual MOT and was the most expensive MOT I have ever had to get a pass. I have always budgeted £200 for a MOT and always put my cars in at least 2-3 weeks early. So I can sort anything out if it fails. But I couldn’t get in touch with my usual place, so had to go else where. So I took it to a local VAG specialist this year how ever they only could get it in the last week before it runs out.
The car in question is my 2010 Passat CC with 144k on the clock. It has passed its last 3 MOT’s in my ownership with a couple of advisory’s what I always sort straight away. After having a good run of MOT’s was expecting something to picked up this time.
So the week before the MOT I noticed a knock coming from the rear quarter. I assumed it was a bush of some kind. So I knew this would get picked up on the MOT and it was. I just didn’t have the time to sort before hand.
I didn’t expect it to fail on the anti roll bar joint dust cover being perished on both sides. The LED rear lights all being the incorrect colour. Even though they have passed the last two MOT’s. Rear lights flickered under one of the test conditions, due to a grounding issues. What is a common problem with the CC, something I was aware of thanks to forums. But was something I didn’t notice when I checked the lights. Looks like the MOT centre picked it up before it failed completely. Also had one rear pad that was too low. Caused by a sticky calliper, what they sorted and new rear pads. I also asked them to change the brake fluid for me also as it was due a change.
The garage apologised for the cost on some the parts as they where really struggling to get parts at sensible prices. Came in at just shy of £800.
I shouldn’t complain really it’s a 12 year old car with 144k miles on the clock. It’s been an expensive year with my car. It been generally maintenance items, general wear and tear stuff. So at the start of the year was the thermostat, what I replaced. Then a few months later cambelt and water pump what a local specialist done. I then done the front discs and pads during the summer, i also done an oil and filter change earlier in the year. So over the this year it’s has cost me approximately £1500 to keep the old girl on the road.
I would really like to change my car, but with state of the current car market is putting off at the moment.
Sorry about the rant. Got me thinking, what over people have spent to their cars through a MOT in the past.
