What’s been your most expensive MOT

Well last week my car had its annual MOT and was the most expensive MOT I have ever had to get a pass. I have always budgeted £200 for a MOT and always put my cars in at least 2-3 weeks early. So I can sort anything out if it fails. But I couldn’t get in touch with my usual place, so had to go else where. So I took it to a local VAG specialist this year how ever they only could get it in the last week before it runs out.

The car in question is my 2010 Passat CC with 144k on the clock. It has passed its last 3 MOT’s in my ownership with a couple of advisory’s what I always sort straight away. After having a good run of MOT’s was expecting something to picked up this time.

So the week before the MOT I noticed a knock coming from the rear quarter. I assumed it was a bush of some kind. So I knew this would get picked up on the MOT and it was. I just didn’t have the time to sort before hand.

I didn’t expect it to fail on the anti roll bar joint dust cover being perished on both sides. The LED rear lights all being the incorrect colour. Even though they have passed the last two MOT’s. Rear lights flickered under one of the test conditions, due to a grounding issues. What is a common problem with the CC, something I was aware of thanks to forums. But was something I didn’t notice when I checked the lights. Looks like the MOT centre picked it up before it failed completely. Also had one rear pad that was too low. Caused by a sticky calliper, what they sorted and new rear pads. I also asked them to change the brake fluid for me also as it was due a change.

The garage apologised for the cost on some the parts as they where really struggling to get parts at sensible prices. Came in at just shy of £800.

I shouldn’t complain really it’s a 12 year old car with 144k miles on the clock. It’s been an expensive year with my car. It been generally maintenance items, general wear and tear stuff. So at the start of the year was the thermostat, what I replaced. Then a few months later cambelt and water pump what a local specialist done. I then done the front discs and pads during the summer, i also done an oil and filter change earlier in the year. So over the this year it’s has cost me approximately £1500 to keep the old girl on the road.

I would really like to change my car, but with state of the current car market is putting off at the moment.

Sorry about the rant. Got me thinking, what over people have spent to their cars through a MOT in the past.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a car that failed an MOT because I’m usually quite on top of things and get stuff sorted right away. I check bulbs, tyres and all the obvious stuff on a fairly regular basis so I’d like to hope I’d never fail on those sorts of things. Obviously there are some things that can crop up that aren’t immediately obvious though like a perished CV boot or whatever, so I guess I’ve been lucky.

That said, a few years ago my wife’s old S-Max failed on brakes. I’d checked the pads, the outside at least and the discs and pads seemed ok there. They weren’t ok on the inside though and the discs and pads were absolutely ruined there. So that’s probably the most expensive for me. Garage quoted something like £600 to change it all but I just did it myself for £200.

Probably about £1000 because I combined a load of overdue suspension work and new brakes and an entire service at the same time. I do as much work myself as I can (be bothered to do). I know my limits though in terms of ability and patience without a proper ramp.

First time I have one failed like this, sense maybe my first car what was banger. Genuinely stay on top of it, this year it just needed that bit of more attention.

Many years ago I had a Scorpio Co'sworth estate.
Brought it for £900 with 180K on the clock & 10 months MOT on it.
Used it as a daily driver till next MOT, took it in expecting a few jobs on it, failed as expected but the list of jobs for repair came to £1,500

Decided to break the car for spares, as interior, engine etc were in good condition. Made just over £1k

First car was a 15 year old Megane with about 130k miles. Plenty of welding needed, brakes failed, steering failed, sketchy electrics. Needed the best part of a grand most years. I learnt the lesson that a cheap car isn't really cheap - but getting together enough money for something better took a while as a recent graduate I didn't earn enough to cover living costs. Now I buy cars near-new and replace when they start having issues.

About £35, one of my bikes failed on a missing £3 exhaust clip.

Other than that only ever the cost of the MOT.

Although my service the other week did highlight lipped front disks and my rears getting a bit low so a £230 service cost me £600ish. Still an improvement on the £1k it would have cost if I left it to the servicing garage to do the work

From an actual fail - £40 to weld a small hole. Wasn't causing any real structural issue but it was close enough
From advisory - £150. Leaking shock.

£80 always a pass
Expensive, no? My usual drive-in MOT is £50, which I thought was expensive compared to other garages I have used in the past.

Edit: oh wait, is that why it's always a pass? Have I been dumb and missed the joke lol my guy charges £75 for that but he's changed lately and said he has to see the car at least lol

They did and they did. Which really annoyed me as it was a lovely bike with a clean MOT sheet until that

Bumholes!
My last MOT would have failed on the brake light not coming on with my rear brake without sufficient force, but they adjusted and passed it as it was just a simple adjustment.
