Handbrake's great for re-encoding to the same resolution, there's no upscaling possible.
Avidemux is a little confusing at first, even after telling it to convert to mp4 you still need to add the .mp4 tag to the filename yourself. Also the prog does crash randomly.
Freemake works well but you need to be careful with the installer or you end up with a load of junk installed alongside.

I believe that mkvtomp4 also does avi files. Well worth a look IMO.
