Got VB cable so no wifi router option. But i'd like to play 3ds with people on net. So seen usb wifi dongles. Which one is best for this purpose please? So i can just stick it in my usb slot and use it to play on net mainly using 3ds wifi. ta

Not sure what would work in this case, surely you need a wifi router to use a wifi dongle? There are plenty of routers that work with Virgin, just search for cable routers.

also virginmedia give you a router for free
i think the op needs to explain his setup more before we recommend a usb wifi dongle.
also this is in the wrong section i think?

The wifi dongle will share his (wired) PC internet connection so the 3ds can connect to the net via his PC.

You should contact VM and see if they'll send you out a Superhub or similar, if not then any wifi cable router will work perfectly. If you're on VM and don't have a wifi capable router then you must be using some pretty old kit! what speed BB do you have?

What do you mean no wifi router option?

Im on Virgin Cable Broaband and they gave me a Netgear wifi router.

dont give anything to longterm customers...
They do if you call and ask. I've been a customer since Nynex / NTL, now Virgin and when my old router started playing up I called and they sent out the new model that they were giving new customers.
Just don't take no for an answer.

Apparently they only give Superhub to customers with 30mbits or higher BB. Am on 10mbits. And pull 1.2mbit easy all day! That wifi dongle is so easy option just plug usb and go! Someone must be using similar set up.

"Accidently" break your current modem, they'll replace it with their new Netgear Wireless jobby, simples! :) they don't use the old modem kits any more, mine was replaced when an engineer came out he said it was ancient.

honest? which modem did you get? was it part of being on cable deal? I've only got cable no phone...

I think what you are after is a wireless router e.g. Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router/4-Port Switch

That's what my parents use to share their Virgin broadband via wifi to their home PCs, laptops, phones, etc. I know you are after a USB stick but I doubt it's as flexible as a router. Also can't understand why you say a router won't work because you have cable. My parents have cable VM too with a VM supplied cable modem which connects to the router.

(This thread should get moved to internet/networking really.)

I've just rang VM and they told me. That if my modem is broke they would replace it with smame crappy NTL home 256 And not a nice wifi jibby...! ??!??!??!

What you say to that?

I just had my old NTL modem replaced with a netgear wireless jobby today, i had slow speeds apparantly this will speed it up.

Just go on the VM forum, tell them your having slow speeds they will ask you to show some details and then book an engineer to come out and swap the modem.

That's bull. You're either lying or trolling.
They will send a wireless router, they do give you a modem to connect to the cable that's coming from the wall, the modem does connect to the wireless router that they provide.
These things are given at installation or if it's not a new installation they are sent by courier.
I've never heard of this Home 256 'jobby' that you're talking about. 256 what?
I have a netgear wireless router that they provided. Work on your phone skills and get one from them.

Its the truth honest to God. Spoke with some call agent babe from India and she told me all am gonna get if my modem cracks is same old box. ... But got net gear router and wanna connect that. is is possible?

I just bought the new Xbox 360 250GB Slim with built in wifi a few days ago, but was just using the basic Ambit 256 Cable Modem so had to keep switching the modem to PC and back.

Anyway I rang Virgin Media last night, they only give you a wireless router modem if you have a 30GB connection or higher, also a one off £30 charge for the Wireless 'N' USB adapter.

Pity I didn't have my Gigabyte motherboard it had dual ethernet connections. :(

They only give you a Virgin Media Hub modem router if:

  • New customers: Free with 10Mb broadband
  • Existing customers: Free with 10Mb broadband if you've never had broadband with us, £60 when you upgrade to 10Mb broadband.

For the Virgin Media Super Hub:

New and existing customers:
  • Free when you add or upgrade to 30Mb broadband, 50Mb broadband or 100Mb broadband.
  • £75 when taken with 10Mb broadband.

Wireless 'N' USB adapter
If your computer doesn't have a built-in wireless "N" adapter, you'll need this one to get all the benefits of your Virgin Media Hub or Superhub. This adapter makes setting up your wireless connection a doddle.
Suitable for desktops and laptops.

New and existing customers:
  • £30 with 10Mb broadband or 30Mb broadband
  • Free with 50Mb broadband or 100Mb broadband

why not just purchase a small 10/100 network switch for like £8 and a spare length of cable to attach both the xbox and pc too? or if you want wireless just pickup a wireless cable router, plug the network cable coming from the modem into it and away you go?
dont go to virginmedia for a router as i've heard all they give out now is the superhub. and i hear its rubbish for wifi.

Thats all wonderful.

1. I am not new customer so VM wont give me new modem.

2. Am on basic 10mbs account so VM wont give me new modem.

3. Wireless 'N' USB adapter you talking about, ,can i plug it in my usb and share my VMBB through it?
