Am I right in assuming that the on-board sound card in a new Gigabyte P35 mobo is better than a Sound Blaster Audigy card?

I believe you assume wrong, well personally I've found my audigy to be much better than the onboard

Sound cards aren't as bad as graphics cards in terms of life span. Your Audigy will still be much better than using onboard.

onboard + external dac > any audigy including the current £200+ ones.
