Whats better, Athlon 2 quad or P II X2?

I'm putting a pc together for me son and i have the following cpus;

Athlon 2 440 with all four cores unlocked,
Phenom II 550BE running as a twin core.

Which of these two would give the best all round performance? (includes gaming)

I would guess the Phenom II if you can unlock it into a quad.

Can't get the phenom to unlock at all otherwise I reckon that would be the obvious choice.

I think the athlon if you pair it with a decent graphics card. I would rather have a quad core than the extra l3 cache. The athlons aren't bad overclockers either with a good cooler.
