• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

whats better?

thats several times faster than you can possibly see.

Stop being silly, any lag is an issue somewhere else in your pc.

stay calllmmmm ladies

im not beeing silly lol

I said it was for jumps and movement. the cod1 engine alows you to jump higher etc if you have the right fps for it. and some maps on the game push my fps right down to 90-100 at times.

i am keeping my GT for now. these new cards i am talking about are not a replacement for my system.

ok..

This is what i have so far... after having changed it about 30-40 times now.

everything is open to discusion (mainly the graphics card/cards!) but the price needs to stay the same'ish

the things that are not listed are not needed.

ok

my m8 has 2 x 7600GT in sli

i have an 8800GT 512MB OC

In the game we play (old) he gets very close if not higher fps rates to me. this brought me to the conclusion that 2 cards is better than one if you want fps in old games.

in cod4 its a different story. but the pc i am building right now will not be used for anything such as cod4. just cod1. (the old game:))

thankyoo again

This is more likely due to that 'old game' being almost entirely CPU-limited.

GPUs develop at a much faster rate than CPUs (or they have in recent years anyway), so games older than 4 or 5 years often become highly CPU-limited when played on fairly recent systems.

If you're looking for insane framerates on Quake3 (or whatever game it is), then I'd recommend looking into a nice new core2duo CPU to compliment your 8800GT.

do you need this pc for anything else?

if not I think you're bonkers! invest that £300 on either a new faster cpu or a better single slot card.

Neither of which you really need.

Have you clocked the Q6600? What CPU is your mate running?

Also forgive my ignorance but why would fps make you jump higher? I don't game online so I wouldn't know if this was common.

i havnt overclocked my cpu yet. dont know how too:o

Not sure how it makes you jump higher or further, it just does :D;)

and i think your misunderstanding things m8y, this pc isnt for my use, its for a m8 who also plays that game.

aah right, well anyway you have to get a cooler better than stock, doesn't have to be expensive and learn how to clock your cpu. It's the law with q6600s :)

IIRC it's just a property of the Quake3 engine. Above a certain framerate (which is way higher than the max monitor refresh rate, something like 200fps) input from the mouse and keyboard is handled slightly differently by the engine. I don't know the details, but if you care I'm sure that google does ;)
