What's causing this engine whine?

Hey

I don't suppose anyone can give an educated guess to what's causing it before I start buying parts.

clio sport 172.

http://youtu.be/rcUHaA-rh_U

annoying whine from engine bay right side.
Aux belt, cambelt, waterpump and associated pulls replaced in may.

that in my mind leaves the pas pump and alternator.

pas pump has no noise change when moving steering wheel so Imo unlikely to be that.

So I'm left thinking alternator.

I just want to be sure before I start messing with the bits ha

thanks

Not that audible in the vid, but alternator would be a good bet, could also be bearings somewhere, but you say you replaced the water pump, so maybe not.

If they aren't auto-tensioning, I'd retension the belts starting with the easiest. I had a recurrent whine from my MX5 after tensioning the cambelt about 3 times. Damn thing is slacker than pretty much every belt tension gauge's effective range.

What is it going to take for you to drop this shed of a car?

It does sound either bearing-y or slight belt slip as above. Not sure if the clio has the same setup in the 172 but the older 2.0 engine had a manually adjustable aux belt tensioner

Cold start I'm assuming?

All 172/182 engines I've heard sound exactly like this from cold - assumed it was normal.

Everything's been fixed....except all these problems you keep finding

Anyway not trying to be unhelpful - the older (i.e 97ish megane) 2l unit definitely has a tensioner that you set so start there.
