I've been using a Dell 2407WFP-HC since 2007. Has much changed in monitors since then? What would my options be if I needed to replace it with something as good, a) of the same size (24") or b) bigger (say 30")?
IPS and LED backlights i'd say are the biggest improvements. I've got a 2408WFP and compared with a 23" asus pro art panel it looks a bit lacklustre and it doesn't half kick out some heat. If i had the funds available i'd be getting a newer dell screen or the 24" asus pro art. (would have to be something 16:10 as i don't like the 16:9 aspect of the 23" asus)
Sadly almost every display now has an LED backlight. The high-end displays aimed at image professionals still use CCFL (an Asus monitor using the word professional doesn't count).
Think the biggest changes in colour critical monitors (*VA/IPS panels) have been in efforts to reduce ghosting making them somewhat suitable for gaming, making the monitors more affordable and making LED-backlit monitors an option.
Since you are using an extended gamut monitor I assume that was a conscious choice and in that case Dell has some interesting options in the 24", 27" and 30" range.
And for comparison sake, tftcentral.co.uk Dell 2407WFP-HC review
Biggest change is that Dell started using IPS panels instead of PVA giving amongst other things better viewing angles.
