looking to get a van soon, but due to space it will likely be a small van and with a potential £1000 budget that would rule out the modern versions of the Peugeot partner, Citroen berlingo/dispatch(unless that’s pug), bipper, nemo, combo, transit courier and probably a decent vivaro/traffic/T4, it may or may not rule out a carvan, I just can’t properly figure out if a carvan is useful or not.

Normal van I’d like one with a side door, so the older partner, berlingo, kangoo, connect, combo seems to be what I can find and with the French ones I’m trying to avoid the old 1.9D, don’t know what I will load in the van and how often, but want a van, not to replace the car, but would be more daily used.

I’ve wanted an astravan for years but at the time I was never interested in owning a van, I just liked the modified scene for them, not that filling the back with speakers or vxr one interests me, just a status, however while I have seen some for my budget, I can’t help think that would be a waste as it’s technically an estate car lol.

Do you need the security of a car van? if not why not just get a big estate or MPV, the insurance will be cheaper for starters.

You might find some differences in tax, insurance and what speed limits apply between different types of vans and derived vans. If you are buying a van it is important to know that many come under different speed limit rules on NSL main roads and dual carriageways to other vehicles but some are exempt and have same rules as a car.

Ha thanks for replies.

Well there’s only so much you can put in a title and I didn’t go in to depth in the OP, I don’t now if a carvan just has a change in the rear part of other things, to be fair given the amount of modified vans about and how easy they seem to be done, I don’t know what the vans apart from the Astra are based on, mean yeah the berlingo and kangaroo has a car version, but I’m not sure the car was made first? I’m just trying to see the point in a carvan all together really.

No I don’t want another car, what’s the point in that? Might as well get a cheap run around and use my pug 2008, I want an actual van, I just don’t have space for one that’s bigger than a vivaro, the vivaro probably pushing it as max size.

For a business, buying a van can be cheaper / more tax effective than a car but the people using them may not need a real van. Fiesta van and astra van are an ideal solution.

What are you main reasons for getting a Carvan, will you be planning on keeping tools in there or transporting a lot of equipment around? If not then i wouldn't bother. I used to use a Astra van, then a Nemo, and then a Berlingo for work, but hated them all, i would much rather off driven round in a car.

Late response, but thanks for the replies.

I am aware of speed restrictions etc, mean the van I use at work currently(contracted with a family run business, so not commercial as such) is a 17 plate Renault lowloader and do 60-70 any time and no fuss with police, the only time I read up on law with the speeds were certain commercial vehicles and transporters, so I don’t know what the actual deal is as everyone does 60-70 is not more either way unless that limited.

Anyways the van is for personal use, I am looking to start my own business and may use the van if ever required, but it’s something from
Home, so it won’t be anything professional that I would need a van in any particular way or go about things in a particular way for that matter.

I wouldn’t be keeping tools in, I wouldn’t need to require to unless I’m taking somewhere for personal use, the only reason I mentioned carvans because I was intrigued, they must serve a purpose? However I would still likely aim more for a proper van with a proper cargo setup and as for the driving, can’t say I’ve driven the small vans, I’m used to driving the big ones like sprinters, relay box vans, boxsters, vivaro, masters etc, I did use a T5 for delivering years ago as it was hired for DPD where I used to work, as icon as those things are, I actually didn’t like the drive, I found the vivaro much much better. A van is a van, I don’t expect too much from one.
