ok so im playing online bf2142. ping is fine 30 - 40

my ping rockets to 200 - 300 ish

this is the same time my flatm8 goes on the internet.

He says hes only browsing. Last time my ping went up like this he was downloading.

He swears hes not downloading only browsing.

He does say he has skype loaded (but he aint using it) he also has quite a few programs on his computer but he isnt using them at the time.

so he thinks that its our isp sky that is the problem.

So whys this happening? sky throttling connection? bf2142 doing smt?

any speedtest i do the line seems fine (speedtest.net)

Well this would indicate a problem on his side. If he is definitely not DLing and not lying to you check his PC for malware/spyware. Make sure he isn't using a torrent service, even if not downloading. if not then you might need to check some router settings.

Run netstat -a on his machine this should show connections on his machine shouldn't it.

I can't see just browsing has an effect on your ping to be honest.

Although when my housemate downloads off the net with usenet my pings go ewwww.

so its possible something/someone is leeching off his machine perhaps either due to a harmless (ish) program he has downloaded or possible even something more sinister.

also from the netstat results how do you tell from the list what is legit and what isnt?

cheers :D

I'd go for the lying option here. I've lived with people in the past that will swear blind they'd not downloading...when they are.

Either that or he's browsing image-heavy sites a lot (hopefully not one-handed).

I'd go with this too, presuming you are on up to 8MB, then just normal browsing shouldn't affect your ping much, but "browsing" youtube is really just downloading etc.

He could have some software trying to update (windows update?) iplayer? 4od?

any PC with a lot of established software on it will have say

antivirus update, adobe update, windows update, skype, messenger, outlook express and a whole lot more running invisibly and accessing the internet without asking permission that or spy/malware

cheers, ill get him to do the netstat thing and get a list of his connections (active and passive)

should i be worried? im thinking if he isnt being careful about what he does/downloads on the internet.. it could compromise my pc as well. (wifi router)

im happy for him to get his own phoneline put in and for him to do what he likes on that...

As long as you don't have writable shared folders on the network, you'll be protected from the most obvious viruses/anything he does.

He might not be downloading, but uploading has an even greater effect on ping times.

Just access the router and look at the data downlaoded and uploaded. If it is changing quickly while you arent doing anything, it can only mean one thing.

yeah I installed that iplayer the other and by default it had ticked to share programs even when I wasn't running it.

had a look at the router logs. (could only go back 12 hours)

there was apparently traffic up to 3 am. heres an example...(nope i wasnt on)

i did a lookup of the destination ip and its Sky ie us i guess (its our isp) havent checked the others.

ok unfortunately hes away out.

checked router stats. . His computer is logged in. (shows up in attached devices to router)

so i quickly checked my ping in bf2142. Its fine.

logged out of bf2142.

checked www.speedtest.net

ping 50

download rate is only 1968 kb/s usually its about 6850 kb/s

hrmm

Could well be downloading very very slowly but have uploading on over 10kb/s without thinking it matters. Seval times Ive had to change peoples file sharing programs as low an upload as possable.

I installed netmeter on the other PCs in my house now too, cos my isp started capping my connection at peak times.

True. The amount of people killing connections with upload I've seen.. Gah :/

my isp is sky. Never had a problem before.

is there a program where i can monitor/ restrict him from maxing out the line? and which also tells me how much GIG has been downloaded over a set time (we have a 40 gig monthly limit)

also those ip address attacks i posted i guess thats normal?
