whats going on?? install files corrupt

since my last install i have seen the following error message:

The file xxx.xxx required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, and error reading fro the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

nothing has actually been from a cd-rom so that rules that out, the last install to fail was itunes which was freshly downloaded from apple

any ideas on the issue would be greatly appreciated

quite often file copying/read errors can be attributed to hardware faults.

could be your hard drive or possibly ram. try downloading memtest86+ and run it from a bootable cd for a few hours. that should rule out the ram.

i'd imagine if you goto the website of whoever makes your hard drive, they'll have utilities you can download to check your hard drive.
