What's going on with my bank?

I just went into the Woolwich and drew out £1000 over the counter with my rubbish little saver card that doesn't even have a card logo on it and they gave me the £1000 no questions asked, didn't even ask for ID. When I walked out I thought that I could have been anyone and just found that card in the street. Is it normal for banks to give out large sums of money with no ID whatsoever?

Did you enter your PIN number? If so, then they take the fact that you have a card and a PIN to mean that it is only the account holder withdrawing money. If the PIN is divulged, this is in breach of the T&Cs of your account so you'd be liable for this withdrawal anyway.

nope, Barclays are quite strict about what ID you use, unless you know the staff by being in the bank all the time.

I get asked for 2 forms of id (only one a bank card) to withdraw £100+ over the counter unless I go to my local where everyone knows me.

I'd complain if I were you.

No not at all, normally you'd have to phone the bank in advance.

I'd ask to speak with the manager and ask about there procedures asap.

With nationwide I have to provide photo ID for transactions over £500. (Even though I went to school with the person behind the counter).

Seems strange that they didn't for such a large sum even if you did type in your pin.

Didn't even enter a pin, handed over the card, I asked for £1500 but they said they could only really give me £500 but said they'd let me have £1000, they gave me the money, I signed a receipt and then walked out with a grand cash.

Ah, so you did sign a receipt. In that case, they probably checked it against one on their screen. But still, anyone could have forged the sig if picked on the street. But for that amount, ID should have been necessary.

I bet you can't phone your local bank! Call centres abroad.

Yeh but a signature is just a little squiggle, anyone could forge a signature, I was really suprised that they didn't ask for ID, I went prepared with my passport and driving licence but didn't even have to get them out lol

Definitely would.

I'm with Halifax, the most I've lifted out over the desk was about £300, all I needed to do was sign for it.

[edit]
Love the phrase under your sig Sherbert, made me laugh.

Same here, i took out £5k the other day and was ID'D by the bank person, which was fair enough.

Idd, it might add a couple mins to the transaction but i would much prefer that and know that my cash is somewhat safe!

I want to join a new bank anyway so I think now is the time to start looking, I want one with a good interest rate on both a savings account and a current account. Who do you guys all use?

always get ID's at natwest, goto a small local branch and always see one of 3 people at the desk so they must recognise me

At natwest you can take out £999 without ID.

I needed £1200 the other day, but I didn't have ID on me, so they suggested I withdraw the £950 and get the rest from the cash machine, which I did.

They suggested ways to get around the system... people are entirely too honest!
