What's Going On??

Ok so I told about my Vista losing Dll files here...http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17886663

Well now I cannot update Vista Ultimate. I went to the Services in the control panel to see if Windows update was on Automatic. It wasn't, it was on disable. So I turned it on but it is defaulting back to disabled. So I re-installed Vista & put SP1 in & still it was on Disable. I still cannot get it to turn on or get it off disable in Services.

I booted up in to my XP Pro & what the hell...the same thing. XP is on a different HDD & it's been installed for about 2 weeks.

Surely this cannot be a Virus, I have Trend Micro 2008 AV & it's up to date.

I am getting this error "ERROR 1050 cannot start because it's disabled or has no enabled devices associated with it". This is when I go in to Services & try to turn it on.

I have no clue what's going on & getting rather fed up with Windows. I have installed on both these HDD before & this never happened.

Anyone any ideas...please?

Cheers

Do I get a prize for getting not 1 single reply apart from myself? Lol

I reinstalled so taking it from there.

Surprised know one had an answer tho?

Sorry no help really

Just go from a fresh install as you've done, Use your noodle as what progs etc to DL or install

Dunno how decent trend 2008 is so my 1st stop would be to basic install, Do some googling on that AV and see if its overall rating is good

Ohh and from an outsiders point of view looking in, Don't assume any data you've previously saved to cd/dvd etc is clean, Until you know your system is 100% (i know there's no such thing) but 99.999999999% secure, Then go through anything you're likely to be using data/backup-wise

Only ever had a trojan or 2, Even then i let an online site take care of it, I assume if it was a virus it explains stuff missing/awol eg: dll's but i dunno what trojans do at worst

My rule of thumb is, Install only clean backup'ed data/progs etc

If i go to certain sites and use certain progs i make sure av is up to date and even then i read comments about what i'm dl'ing

No help after the fact but just think before using/trying ;)

Will go try and see the rep for that AV

ps: also you can wipe DLL's off with some 3rd party uninstallers too (found that out years ago lol)

Ciao
