Hi Lads any ideas what could have gone here,
i built this system for my brother-in-law about 5 months ago then all of a sudden pop nothing, this is what he said happened:

"As i said on the phone to you, i switched it on, and for a split second it started to power up, then all power was lost including the TV, the fuse had tripped on the main circuit board in the garage. I have tried it with another power lead in a different power socket with no luck, also tried to see if there was any light on the m/board, still nothing, in fact there is no sign of life anywhere.

i have no idea what caused this, maybe a power surge, but then i have a surge protector adaptor as well."

sounds to me the power supply has gone maybe? bit strange eh.
spec as below:

Corsair HX Series 620W Modular PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775)
Samsung SpinPoint T 320GB SATA-II
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

i'll be getting this back to sort out what do ya reckon has gone?

cheers

Does sound like the PSU definitley, if you take out the PSU itself and bridge the pin on the green wire and the black pin near it as in this pic

, the PSU will come on if its working. If the PSU does work, it could only really be the motherboard has been damaged somewhere. Unless I spose if the switch on the case or the wires leading to the power on pins has been disconnected somehow, although that seems unlikely. I did lose a PSU once during a power cut and I may be wrong but I think I had a surge protector as well.

could i try this?

Now i have an Enermax 465 power supply, would it be up to powering the above system, or would i have to take out the GTX first and replace it with 1800xt to see if it is the Power supply.

Cheers

An update for you, it was the power supply that had gone and hopefully thats all, i suppose thats why its a good idea to spend on a decent supply, so if does go the rest of the conponents are hopefully safe.
waiting for a replacement.

thanks for you help lads
