My old P4 2.8ghz is my main work horse till i build new pc so was thinking whats most powerful gfx i can throw at it?

P4S533VL ASUSTEK WITH SONY Branding tower...

and it has agp 4x only no pci...

Got 2gb ram pc 2700 to go with it.

Also have noticed that fsb is running at 133mhz. That looks faster by 33mhz than all current z68 boards that run 100 mhz. Am I right? So old is better than new? whats going on?

Thanks

LOL, seriously... LOL

i;d have a serious read before trying to compare p4 to SB :p

anyway, i'd really go for something like a second hand 4870 - nothing too powerful as your cpu will restrict its performance

Didn't you know?

P4 is 33% better than Sandy Bridge ;)

The best AGP card to get would be a second-hand HD 3850 or HD 4670 AGP edition graphics card.

That said, make sure your PSU is up to the job, may I ask what PSU you are running?

Also, to echo what the guys above have said - SB and P4 really can't be compared on the FSB/BCLK frequencies - as the architectures are so different and SB is so much faster.

To put it into perspective, here is comparison of a top-end Pentium 4 (3.6GHz, 1 core with hyperthreading) compared to the most popular SB CPU for gamers, the i5 2500K:

I love the way you look and no need to guess the "Higher is better" or "Lower is better"

SB opens a can of.....

That diagram shows that i5 2500 is better for games...

PSU says 270Wat out max... Any good? Feel it will be not enough for 4670 ... Any ideas? ta

Yea, it is a little better :)

For the HD 4670, AMD recommends a 400W or greater PSU and for the HD 3850 it recommends 450W.

Therefore, for any half-decent graphics card upgrade you will need to upgrade your PSU as well.

For this to be possible, you case needs to support ATX type PSUs. Do you have the model name/number of the PC? Failing that, can you upload a photo of the rear and inside of the tower?

Thanks for help. On back of tower says: model: sony pcv 7776

Looking at the user guide and some images available online, it seems that the PSU is indeed a ATX type -so you could buy a new PSU like the ones mentioned above.

However. I'm not sure how much clearance inside the PC case there is for a graphics card. So it would be worth opening up the side of the PC case to see what maximum length full-height, dual slot graphics card you can install in the AGP slot.

For reference, the total card length of an AGP HD 4670 like this HIS one is 8 inches.

Also, here is a good review which talks about the best options for an AGP graphics card.
