Has it peaked?

It's got a lot better since the days of windows 95/98 but since about the mid 2000's it's not really changed that much. Software is stable, videos are in HD, connection speed is fast and plenty of media out there so i don't really see what's next. Is it just going stagnate from now on till the end of the universe. Still find it bizarrely weird that we have internet btw.

The Internet will basically become the communication infrastructure of the World, plenty of countries still have disparate networks carrying Video/Voice/DATA etc, in the future everything will be carried over the Internet.

I think Video has a long way to go yet, I think broadcast/satellite will become obsolete, everything will just go Video on Demand.

It's definitely not peaked - There is still so much to evolve yet.

Once internet speeds are fully up to it (worldwide), everything will be in the "cloud". The need for "physical media" could reduce to zero.

More idiots will be using it.

I remember having it in the early 90's on a 56k modem, those were the days when there were hardly any big headed ego searching idiots using it, mostly friendly relaxed people on it.

Whilst the internet has it's practical uses there are many annoyances I find today. Facebook and Twitter are pointless mind rot as any other social media site (thankfully never have and have no intention of using them) - if you want to keep in touch with friends or family go and visit them, phone or text them, email or use Friends reunited or something if you lost touch, don't use that Social media rubbish to look big with your 147 friends that you actually only know about 5 of.

Then you have people essentially losing there individuality and personality, everyone saying and repeating the same words like fap, pasty smash, keyboard warrior etc, and people who make a post with no writing but just some random gif they fetched from the web etc - basically everyone trying to get some kind of virtual acceptance or reputation.

But to answer your question, everything seems to be going HTML5 now.

- better conferencing (as it stands, people still fly everywhere to close deals).
- the problem of wifi needs to be solved - that is, the world's wifi spectrum is running out. not sure what the right words are but basically "wireless signals" in the air are being stifled from being "crowded"... (it's a real thing apparently)
- cloud computing with 0 input lag, including gaming
- 0 ping for everything (since we're talking about ideal potential)
- internet still needs to mature. people are still fuzzy on etiquette, and act differently to how they would if people knew who they were. trolling is an example of something that doesn't need to exist. that's not to say our names should be associated with our internet profiles, but maybe a static profile that's used in big websites.
- reversal of censorship, as it gets in the way of "free sharing of information" which is what the internet is all about.
- better search engines (so i can find my obscure porn obviously)

The CEO of Google in a keynote address last year said something along the lines of infrastructure needing to massively improve (and he said it will, very soon) in order for the Internet to reach the next level of potential. He's talking about 1Gbps fibre-optics and stuff so that all HDTV, film, maps, games and other streaming services are delivered at a perfect streamed-rate. Then he says that will help services such as maps and voice-software to become even more complicated and even deeper embedded in our lives (e.g. a high functionality Siri-type app in the car that is a real-time search engine and a voice-synthesizer in one).

Also to whoever said porn: you've not been keeping up with the news lately, huh? The porn industry is in steep decline.

Companies will spring up offering VPN connections to countries where the net is uncensored, so all the illegal stuff will keep happening regardless of the measures put in place to try and stop it.

No just uncensored but more data. People do it at the moment to get a better range of films and TV from netflix, as the UK one sucks lol.

you honestly think the Intermet hasn't changed since the mid 2000's? Seriously. I've got IPv6, HTML5, CSS3, The Arab Spring and a few other pivotal moment on the phone. They'd like a word with you.

Also; since the days of Windows 95/98? Is that how we measure the progress of the Internet?

I think you'll find that you would have been on a much slower modem than that in the early 90's as the first 56k modem wasn't invented until 1996. I remember using a 14.4k myself. Blazing speeds!

I think the net made leaps in 2002 and 2005.

2002 - Mozilla came out and introduced a pop-up blocker. It was game over for those annoying free pages such as Geocities, Angelfire and Fortune City, the bane of Web 1.0.

2005 - the year when most broadband providers equalled or surpassed a T1 connection, 1.5mbit, which is my benchmark speed. (long story short - T1 was my first ever connection, in my uni halls, went back home for the summer and discovered how pants 56K was, so I was only going to be happy once home internet equalled a T1)
