Hi all

been a long time since i've looked at GPU's and im just wondering what the next one up for my 8800 GT Overclocked Edition is.

Thanks

well an 8800 GTX I suppose ;)

In modern terms though as the 9800 series are effectively the same card rebranded, the GTX260 is probably the next worthwhile step up.

GTX260 216core is the next logical upgrade

8800gt / 9800gt (same card) £90
9800gtx+ / gts250 (same card) £100
gtx260 192 £130
gtx260 216 £150 (this week only)
gtx280 -non existant now
gtx285 £280
gtx290 (without checking, not sure if this exists :p )
gtx295 £350+

that list goes from you current card as a baseline, with improving performance towards the bottom

ocuk have the 260-216 for £150 this week only, i'm going to get one myself i think, from my current 8800gt ko

cyber mav is right though, there are a few cards between the 8800gt and the 9800gtx+, but you can't get them anymore

don't take these as set in stone benchmarks, but they're a rough guide...

all cards, nvidia and ati will have better performance since then, as there's been many driver updates for both series.

the 4870 and 260-216 core (make sure you get this, not the 192 core), are more or less on par with each other, one wins in some games, the other wins in other games. you know how it is..

the 4850 and 9800gtx+ are on par with each other also..

i don't upgrade my card that often, and i'm going to go for it :)

what res does your screen do?

i play at 1920x1080 and the 8800gt doesn't quite cut it for some games (esp crysis)

L4D however plays fine, along with TF2 (AA low) and Grid is fine too

I'm thinking about getting an ATI 4870, just for a change in scenery ;)

(Ie, Nvdia to ATI, as the latter are generally cheaper, but I don't have any brand loyalty to either atm)

Powercolour have been good for me so far, the early boards I had that had the Nvidia gpus on were fine but god knows what they were.

Some games take advantage of NV or ATI design better than the other, (especially if the devs were paid off) @OP - the next worthwhile upgrade is the 260 216 or a 4870 1GB. If you can find a really cheap one a 512 4870 is also worth looking at as it was 20-50% faster (game dependant) at 1920x1200 compared to my 8800GTS 512 which is a bit faster than you GT, and I haven't been let down by it.
