Hey Guys,

Wondered if someone could help me out here, i've just been watching some footage of the Guns and Roses 'Use your Illusion 2 tour live in Tokyo' and slash during various parts of the set, most notably during his solo after the first song where he blows down what looks like a PVC pipe attatched to his microphone and it alters the sound of his guitar. I just wanted to know what it was?

Cheers

Luke

Talk box I believe is what it called, or a 'free speech' pedal. By blowing it, you get that classic 'Living on a prayer' sound :)

Yeah it's a Talk Box.

You have a small speaker on the floor with a plastic tube coming up to your mouth. The sound of the guitar travels up through the tube and you manipulate it with your mouth. The sound is then picked up by a Mic next to the tube.

It's basically the same as if you put a pair of walkman headphones in your mouth (the small in the ear ones) and move your mouth around while music is coming out of it.

:)

Those sound kinda funky. Also used by Peter Frampton and Foo Fighters on their 'Generator' song.
And Jambi, on the latest Tool album.

I believe Peter Frampton : Show Me The Way was the first to use one (or have a hit single).

Don't know about show me the way but i remember uncle my playing 'Do you feel like we do' for me when i was a teenager and it blew me away - still does today. If you have Frampton comes Alive you should check it out 5-10mins of talk box jiggery pokery :)

Motley Crue - Kickstart my heart is another example i can think of.

Surprisingly that album remains as one of the biggest selling records of all time with 6million+ copies out there! A must for any record collection.
