Ive been a little worried lately about the temperature my 8800GT has been hitting, as i can hear its fan going mental in my case. I downloaded nTune and ive logged the temps during a gaming sesh, and found that at 1 point it was hitting 96c, surely thats too high ? Idle it sits at around 67c. Is this normal or does something need looking into ? Its the original Asus card with the Opposing Fronts picture on it.

Ive just been playing some PKR (that 3D poker game thing) and just by playing that it reached 82c (now idling at 74c), somethings must be wrong then, im gonna have to investigate :(.

yeah thats a bit high, i had that same card here, idled about 53-54, and underload went to about 85-86, which is normal for those cards with the original small fan coolers, as they do run hot, but mine never went mental, was always silent, even underload, so could be a fan problem.

You could try setting up Fan profiles in RivaTuner.

Like above comments to high! Couple of questions though...

1. are you using the stock cooler?
2. if so, have you taken off the stock cooler, cleaned off the excuse for themal paste off, re-applied some proper paste and re-seated?
3. using a 3rd party cooler?

I have an acellero S1 fitted to mine with the turbo fans on it, 40oc idle 55oc ish load.

1. Yep, stock.
2. Nope, dont have a clue how to take it off and i dont have any other paste to replace with.
3. Nope.

As much as id like to get some crazy 3rd party cooler on it, i just cant justify it as i feel the one it comes with should be upto the job (and tbh i think Asus know that, hence why they changed it later on).

I know what you mean, it is difficult to justify, but think of it this way....its a great card and spending less than £20 on an S1 will (imo) prolong the life of the card no end!

My temps were 70oc before i attached the S1. The stock reference coolers are pants + the thermal cement they apply to it is a joke, which anyone will tell you having changed to a 3rd party cooler. Its a cross between playdoh and plasticine.

If its one of the original 8800GTs then the fan profile in the BIOS is bad - the fan stays very slow until the temps go off the scale - then it kicks in at 100% and won't drop the fan speed again until the temperature has dropped a lot - often lower than the temps will drop back to while gaming...

I edited the BIOS on my card for the 1.1v mod and tweaked the fan profile so that it would kick in more agressively earlier on and now my idle temps are 40-44C and load rarely goes over 65-67C - whereas before it could hit 90+ easily.

Definatly setting up Fan profiles in RivaTuner will help, there was a great guide to this in last months (or month before) PC FORMAT.

I have the pny 8800gt and it idles at about 42c and under load goes up to about 54c.
Yours is far to high.

Is that with the stock cooler?

Good to know mate, how did you 'mod' the bios exactly?
