Whats that film?

Hi all,
I am having trouble remembering a film I watched as a child...
It was about a boy who lived near or on some US military base and somehow or for some reason he went in side one of the hangers and there was a spaceship inside. Anyway it ended with the boy going inside the spaceship and the spaceship could talk to him with this big metal eye like thing, but they went travelling around the US.

Or something like that.... Anyone remember the film?
