My current ,trusty , socket 754 set-up , might be in need of updating .

With the July arrival of Conroe , I've noticed the resale prices of my parts beginning to drop in the last couple of months , and need to look forward whilst being able to sell my current stuff at a reasonable price.

Current Spec;

AMD 64 3700+ Clawhammer
1 gig OCZ Gold - 2 x 512mb OCZ4001024ELDCGE-K
DFI Lanparty UT NF3 250gb mobo
Galaxy Glacier Nvidia 256mb 6800GT

Currently knocks out 5000 on 3D Mark 05 ( @ Stock )

So , what would be an equally performing set up on 939 and AM2 platforms ?

Your help will be appreciated , as ever.

Cheers,

Mark

Do you want what is pretty much an exact replacement or do you want something that you can upgrade from and will be a bit of an improvement? I'm going to suggest as a decent improvement but before you get into spending large amounts of money. This system will be about as future-proof as it is possible to get for the moment. If you wanted exactly the same more or less it would be a San Diego 3700, 1gb DDR, any Nforce4 motherboard and a 6800gs PCI-E.

CP-166-AM AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-166-AM)
£179.95 £179.95
MB-070-MS MSI K9N Platinum nForce 570 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-070-MS)
£79.95 £79.95
MY-034-GL GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB5300DC) (MY-034-GL)
£109.95 £109.95
GX-044-CO Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO)
£139.95 £139.95
Subtotal £509.80
VAT £89.22
Total £599.02

Exactly the info I was looking for

A " straight " 939 eqiuvalent , with upgrade possibilities.

And a " future proofing " AM2 set-up.

All in 17 minutes ! , i knew i could rely on you.

Cheers,

Mark

Can't afford to do it all in one hit. ( Need to Sell to Buy and keep running )

As a " sideways " improvement how does this sound ?

Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-002-AK)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-152-AM)

Keep using existing OCZ DDR memory and AGP graphics card for upgrade later to PCI-e Graphics Card .

Cheers,

Mark

It would allow you to upgrade in stages and gives you the chance of getting a PCI-E graphics card when funds allow at least, the motherboard is also supposed to be fairly decent overclocking-wise as well. I'd say go for it although you will need to get a heatsink and fan for the CPU because the one you have selected is OEM :)
