What's the best £150 or less processor

My main worry with conroe is, whats the chance of actually getting one on release date.

I'm sure that OcUk will have plenty in stock mate... its SO worth getting, and so worth the money :)

Even IF you can't get them immediately, they'll sort it out very quickly and lead times to retailers won't be that significant.

Even if you had to wait 1 month is it that big a deal?

Depends on how much money you've got for all the other components. A £150 AMD 4000+ or a Conroe E6300 sitting in their boxes on the shelf isn't much use to you. If you already have a S939 system for AMD then buy the 4000+ but if you also need to buy motherboard/RAM/graphics etc. the cpu isn't the only question is it?

The Conroe E6300 is what I'm likely to go for and will be definitely under £150, probably under £140. I'm starting from scratch so I will need a new MB and RAM too which adds to the cost but overclocked to 2.8GHz will offer unbelievable performance for the money. If you're in the same position as I'm in then Conroe is the way to go unless AMD offer a AM2 x2 3800+ for under £100 and along with the cheaper motherboard might offer very good value for money.

It is thought that am2 x2's will drop to start at around £100, which will be a very good deal, not forgetting the am2 chips are clocking as well, if not better in some cases as the 939 providing you have a good mobo.

I highly doubt OCUK will have much problems with stock. Intel know that they currently sell the most AMD processors (IIRC), and gibbo kows how popular they are gonna be and have aquired stock accordingly.

Opteron 146 is the best. Mine is running at 2800 MHZ. You will not be dissapointed. In PI it does 1 meg in 29.8 seconds. My opteron 165 does it in 29.1 seconds. Not much in it.

I would edit out the competitor Paul (forum rules) before a mod sees it.

I agree though a 144/146 would be the best bet for a cheap chip.

Good point webbo. Though i think its been edited by someone, as i cant see it on my post now. For the record, get your cpu from OcUK,in fact get all your hardware from them, they are nice people :)

LOL, i think you get bonus points for saying that :p

If you want dual core and 150 is your total cost for the project then it has to be pentium d 805 because you havent stated your present rig but your most likely have to buy other stuff.
If its 150 just for the cpu and your spend more on other things if needed then get a e6400 when they come out
