What's the best 360 setup

I've done some searching around and I'm still confused.

When I get my 360, should I connect it to:

a. 19" 4:3 monitor
b. 24" widescreen SD-TV

OK, no-one tell me it should be connected to an HD-TV as I ain't got one nor will I be getting one soon.

What I'm not sure about, in connecting to my 4:3 monitor, is this: will it look funny? Will I be missing bits off the side or will I have borders top and bottom? Are the games made to run in 4:3 mode AND 16:9 and you can switch between modes on the console? Will games look squashed or stretched on my monitor?

The good thing for me about connecting to the monitor is that I already have one, whereas I'll be trying to pick up a widescreen TV 2nd hand.

Thoughts?

The majority of games will have borders top and bottom (few don't - NBA Live 2006, Dead or Alive 4 and Call of Duty 3 that I've tried), however I would say that you should definitely be connecting to a monitor.

Is there no way you could sell that monitor and put it towards a widescreen monitor? They aren't too expensive now.

he's right ive been using my 19tft 4:3 since launch and its lovely resolution and image but damn when I see it running in widescreen at my cousins its SOOOOO much nicer, mind you he has a HD Widesceen 37 sony job.

but still widescreen is essential now for ALL consoles.

you can pick up a nice 19 widescreen monitor on ocuk for like 140

and YOU haven't because...

back on topic - I currently have a Viewsonic VX912 which I think looks pretty good. It's about a year old though, so what will the quality of those cheapo (£140) widescreen 19" monitors like? I could flog it on ebay.

Replies after Have I got New for You please...

..and how do I justify to it to my wife?

take her down to Richer sounds and get the guys there to set up a comparison between standard def 26 and a hd 26. Those boys will do the rest they will spend ages putting different stuff on to prove a technological point.

if that doesn't work, beg.

i don't know what your budget is so i cant really advise you but you can pick up quality 26" hd's for around £400

or you can get a nice tft 19 for £140 like i said, sell your current monitor somewhere "perhaps one of those auction places" for £100 (should get somewhere around that) and add the £40

Just tell her eastenders will look great on it.
Then again you have to justify it why?
I bought a 50" at first she said it was too big but she soon got used to it and now I can't get her off it. She likes the TV too .....

I think she'd struggle with the width.

to be honest, if i had the choice of the two screens you'd listed, i'd probably go for the 24" crt so long as you use the RGB scart lead.

reason is most games will have a border top and bottom when used on a 4:3 screen and you won't get that big a viewing area as a result.

IMO it all depends on the games you want to play on it.

Up until today I used a 28" Samsung WS CRT with an advanced RGB Scart and a lot of the 360 games looked very good, and not that much different to a HDTV/Monitor, but I like my footy and the likes of Fifa & PES don't look that great on my CRT (so I brought a HDTV :))
