Hi all :)

After looking at the price of my 4400x2 cpu on overclockers and not being able to find any much better cpu's that use the 939 socket,Just wondering what is the best amd cpu i can buy that fits my 939 socket motherboard?

Thanks :)

best value cpu you can get is an opteron 170 from the big auction site i cant mention. they go for about £50 and are usually good for an overclock of 2.8 to 3Ghz. i own one myself and its ran happily at 2.95Ghz per core for the last year.

having said that, i notice you have a 4400x2. many of these were just as good as the opty 170`s for overclocking so i would try with yours first.

if you don’t overclock dont bother changing your cpu, if you do you may find a good stepping opteron will overclock quite well on you dual sata mb due to the fact they require minimum vcore increase to clock well, something the dual sata doesn’t provide.

But just as Xander said you may find your 4400 overclock pretty damn well, if it’s a pretty recent cpu say a 06 batch I recon you will have quite a bit of overclocking headroom.

your 4400+ has the same core as an opty. - same cache. it also has an 11x multiplier. unless you know your mobo can do very high fsb i wouldnt take anything (even an opty) if it means a lower multi. the fastest 939 cpu's are the opty 185 and the fx60.

I used a dual sata2 for a while, with early bios's it seemed there was an fsb ceiling of around 275mhz. I read that later bios seemed to let you get very close to 300fsb, but I had long given up using the board by then.

Before I had upgraded to my 170 I used a 146 opty single core. I couldn’t get it to 3ghz yet it would run stable at 3.2ghz on my dfi nf4 ultra-d.

Realistically I think a 165 opty will probably be limited to 2.5mhz on this board and a 170 around 2.8ghz with the extra multi. this is not to say any of these chips will not run at 3ghz, they just need quite a lot of fsb to stretch their legs. Something the dual sata is not that great at providing

If you can grab a high multi dual opteron that will happily run at 3ghz you may have a good setup. look carefully though, many 180 optys didnt clock as well as 170 and 165's.

My temps on my opty 185 are rubbish, its at 2.78 and the temps are in the 60 when its stressed, I have tried it at 2.8 and it seems stabe but I dont want the temps to get any higher really, so Ive kept it at 2.78.

60C isnt rubbish, but dual opterons do tend to respond to low temps.
When my 170 went over 52C it would fail prime at 3ghz, keep it under 50 and it would dual prime all day long

Hesky I think I remember you now, you were part of the Opteron 170 'Mania' back in Feb 2006?

In theory an FX57 mono-core or an FX60 dual-core.

I would suggest that if you want to upgrade go all the way and get yourself a cheap INTEL Core2 Duo system running. I bet you could flog your old CPU/HSF, Motherboard and DDR memory for a good price and do the upgrade for almost no cost (apart from a little effort on your behalf).

Got an Opteron 185 some months ago. Dual core running standard at 2.6- mine o'clocks to 2.79 on standard volts and temps of 30 idle 40 under load(on air with Noctua cooler)
Nice cpu but was expensive (£200) some months ago and have not seen them for sale in UK (retail) since.
If you could sell your existing cpu and buy an Fx 57/60 or Opty 170/180/185 with cost of xchange say £30-£40 this could be a nice 'final' upgrade for your socket 939, imo (just in case though check your m-board is o'k with any new cpu-you may have to download new Bios ?)
If it is going to cost you any more then I agree with BigWayne's suggestion - except might delay & save some more to buy a better Intel Core Duo system:)
