I have bought some headphones for like £200 so instead of playing crappy MP3`s I am looking to source another format that offers some type of HD audio with higher bitrates.

Are CD`s the best you can get or is there another format?

Thanks!

:)

FLAC sounds the same as CD's, it uses lossless compression. It won't sound better than the CD, just the same, but better than mp3 rips.

The best I've got is 24/96 FLAC, mostly vinyl rips. They can be hard to come by.

Other than that you'll find mostly CD quality 16/44.1.

How well recorded/mixed/mastered the material has much more of an impact than format these days. Even with good quality gear and a good recording LAME MP3 or AAC @ 320kbps next to the WAV/FLAC/ALAC is going to sound subtlely different at best, with some crappy recordings the compression can actually make it sound slightly better haha.

There is nothing crappy about MP3's. In fact I'd bet that like most people you couldn't tell the difference between properly encoded MP3 and lossless.

Try here,

Got some of their stuff and it sounds really good. Some of the artists and music you might not like, but they are starting to get into more mainstream music.

This is nothing but a way to con people. We can't hear these higher bitdepths and samplerates; they're used for recording/mastering for several reasons - however the difference isn't at all audible. You could downsample/dither to 16/44 and they would sound the same to you.

FLAC. Can't think of anything else I'd rather use.

Got lots of vinyl digitized to 24bit 192khz now. Thats what I record it in, I would downsample it to 24bit 96khz, but just can't be bothered. :D
