Greetz,

just been looking through the CPU's for sale and pretty shocked how cheap some of the A64's are now (OEM A64 Venice 3000+ £41.11!)

got a few small projects in the pipeline and I was wondering which of the mono-core-64's offers the best bang for buck?

i.e: which one can I stick in a *value* socket 939 mobo and clock the **** out of it :)

Probably the A64 3700+ for £70. Or you can pick up an Opteron 146 for around £90 if you look hard enough.

how about X2 3800+ dual core for less than £100 (if you look hard enough ;) )

edit : sneaky edit in op was that ? ;)

i would say a second hand opteron 144/146 tbh... can be had for sub £50 even for proven 2.9ghz + ones.... if your buying new i would say yeah go for a cheap venice most clock well... if you have a little more to spend 3700+'s also seem to be doing quite well.

I'm using a 3200+ venice, perfect perfromance at a perfect price ! :)

Clocked to 2.5 easily :)

Not sure what a 3200+ venice clocked to 2.5 is equlivient to

a 3700 sandy at a guess.

probably slightly better than a stock 3700.

2.5 isnt really bang for buck. i'd want 2.8-3ghz from any chip i'd buy now

I'm looking for 2.6GHz-2.8GHz using air-cooling. Would the A64 3000+ (Venice) reach close to that?

if the mobo could handle it, i would think so.
300x9 is 2.7.

might take 1.55v-1.6v to get there tho. although that isnt that high

Yeah theres the rub, I was looking at the *value* segment including the mobo so I guess I would need a higher multi to compensate for a mobo not reaching such a high FSB. . .

yea may well be the case.
although dfi's are going for 50 quid in the MM now and 939 chips are scarily cheap

Yeah get an ultra d and a 3000, bout 75 altogether.

more specifically buy my 3000, managed 2.8 (350 x 8) (it wouldnt with a 9)
