hi guys,

at the mo i'm sprucing up an old shuttle to make it more game capable...

this is where it is at:

Shuttle (SB75G2)
P4 3.2GHz
• Radeon 9200 SE -> Radeon X800 XT PE (£18)
• 1 x 512MB PC3200 RAM -> 2 x 1GB PC3200 Micron RAM (£26)
60GB HDD

the next update i am looking at is possibly the CPU... but i dont know how the 3.2 P4 that is in there at the mo stacks up against what became available for that socket (478) after this system was originally set up...

is it worth upgrading? if so, what to?

here is the shuttle i have: click

basically the whole lot cost me 80 quid, and since then i have spent £44 which i think is pretty good, so i dont wanna go spending a lot on the CPU only if its really worth it...

any advice?

If it was a Socket 775 P4, you'd have had a chance, but there's not much better in Socket 478 I'm afraid - The Pentium 4's went to 3.4GHz, and there's also the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition at 3.4GHz...

So basically, you're almost as good as you can get :) The nre Gfx and memory will give you a boost, but the next upgrade would have to be new mobo/cpu/RAM...

Yup, I think that’s as far as you can take that shuttle, being based around a 478 skt and AGP gfx limits its upgrade. You’re best off enjoying it at its current spec and just building a whole new system as reddeathdrinker said :)

If you're playing games then get a REALLY decent graphics card and you'll find the CPU won't actually hold you back much.

An AGP X3850 at £115 might seem like a massive expenditure, but there is almost nothing it won't play at decent settings. There is an AGP X1950 512MB on MM at the moment for £70, which would be massively quicker than the X850XT PE you are suggesting, but I do appreciate that you're getting fantastic value there for £18.

You could also look at putting a small raptor HDD in there (2nd hand can be had for about £30) if noise isn't an issue. Would nicely speed up load times for games with large levels.
