Just having an interesting discussion with my brother about IM networks and which one is the best. Not neccessarily the most popular (I think we can all agree that MSN rules there), but the one thats most reliable and provides the best features without bombarding you with adverts and features that are never used.

I argued for Google Talk.
No matter where I am I never have a problem logging in. (reliability, check)
Adverts aren't a problem either. (adverts, check)
And the network supports all the features that you NEED. Nothing silly like MSN 'winks' :o (all useful features, check)

Discuss.

A conversation like this needs a plug for Trillian . The chat client that works on MSN/ICQ/AIM/Yahoo/IRC. Very useful to run just one program, without any adverts, and still be able to talk to five different networks.

trillian is nice but i find it bloated to be honest, it does too much for me. google chat deserves credit for what it does, but to be honest i use msn, because nobody else has an account on anything else (except a couple of people on AIM who i use ichat to talk to...)

GAIM for the win.... does lots of networks, and uses next to no memory.

I haven't tried google talk tho, I might give it a whirl as I already use g-mail.
