Hi,

I've been looking to put a project onto Kickstarter to get some funding. Alas it seems you have to be in the US to use it, so I'm now looking for the best alternative site.

So far the only ones I've found which stick out are rockethub.com and indiegogo.com. Does anyone have any experience with these or other crowd sourcing sites? Which one would you recommend?

Also if anyone has done something similar do you have any tips for a newbie? As this is the first time I've tried to get funding for anything.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
ng93

p.s. Happy New Year everyone :)

Thanks for the link, however I'm not sure giving equity away is going to work as it's a project rather than a business, so not sure how people can invest in it. Although I am planning to sell it once it's done, so maybe this could work?

The project is a video game. Don't want to say too much ATM as i'm not sure whether that would be against the no advertising rule, maybe a mod can clear this up?

With the games I've seen on Kickstarter the developers have explained it enough to give an idea of what the games about, but not in so much detail as to make it easy to copy. Kinda like a preview/review. Plus with games a lot of what makes them good is the implementation rather than the idea itself.

I don't really have a choice though, it's the only way to get enough money to finish it.

Oh ok fair enough, the problem is that I have an idea for something, related to music but I don't really have the time at the moment to do it, and don't want to tell anyone because I believe there is nothing like it at the moment, (well found something similar but the website is poorly done)

Isn't it a bit risky putting it on there, can't people just copy other ideas?

A lot of people believe that just because they have a brilliant idea (ie. at this stage it is just an idea and has not been implemented), that automatically, people will be queuing up to copy it.

This is not the case.

Certainly if an idea has been proven to work and gone global (eg a search engine which uses back links to rank websites...ie google), then people may try and copy and get to market asap. However, what a lot of inventors fail to realise is that the most difficult part is implementing an idea...not necessarily coming up with the idea itself.

Obviously, if the idea is ridiculously easy...then sure...it can be copied and you would do well to keep it a secret.

If however, it is a genuinely great idea, then chances are, it won't be easy to implement or copy. And your success will lie in the implementation. marketing and selling of the product/service.

EDIT: Here's a great idea: create a download (or live streaming) site, where people can watch TV shows which have already aired. They pay to watch the TV show. itunes has done it for movies. LoveFilm/NetFlix is doing it for movies. Why not TV Shows? Now its a great idea, but the money will be made in the implementation...not the idea. Anyone can have a great idea...but as I said earlier, the implementation of the idea is where your success lies.

Now...lets see who is going to run off with my idea above and become a millionaire ;)

If the project is not going to lead to anything productive, then you will always struggle to get funding (even on KickStarter).

Almost all projects (KickStarter or otherwise) that get funding will have a final result/product/service which more often than not will be of some value to some people who are prepared to pay money for it. Those who invest will want a percentage of profits OR may want the end product (eg, if somebody is making a film...the investor may want a copy of that movie).

What's your project...don't be embarrassed. Have you got a website for it OR is it top secret (like so many other projects out there that never see the light of day ;)).
