What's the best reasonably priced calibration device (colorimeter)

Have a read here although it doesn;t include the one you listed.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/calibrating.htm

The Datacolor Spyder2Express doesn't seem bad if your on a budget. For quality results spend a little more (double) on the LaCie Blue Eye for more accurate colour results (this is the one I would buy as it gives the results Baddass gets in his reviews on tft central)

Alternatively for a good improvement from standard settings just download a profile from http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1168121&highlight=calibrated or http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm.

Although every monitor is different so the results may not be perfect but I find them always better than how the monitor ships if not perfect.

Thanks for the links.

Do the manufacturers of these things have some kind of scam going where it's forbidden to rent them out?

It seems bizarre for a home user to spent a ton on one (because they obviously want the best result), only to have it go on to sit in a drawer for 99.9% of its life. You could just rent a high end one for a day, make your profile, then repeat in the future as and when you feel like re-calibrating.

I'm not convinced the renting/loan works that well as you need to recalibrate from time to time - I do mine every 3 months with a Spyder 2 pro.

If you have a few mates who you can share it with and split the cost then it's workable.

..Then you could rent it again from time to time.

It just seems stupid to buy a mediocre one and have it sit in a drawer for months on end (or forever in some cases, I imagine) when you could just rent a high-end one every so often, get better results, and likely spend less overall.

Baddass - do you know if there is some kind of racket whereby it's forbidden to rent these things?
