Hey there guys.

What are the best settings for video capture for the best quality for the lowest size, and minimalizing performance hit when recording?
I don't know a lot about compression apart from if you compress it then it usually lowers quality a lot, and with my 1mb upload speeds, it takes hours to upload a uncompressed 2gb 60 second video to youtube :p

So rather than editing a uncompressed clip etc, is there any decent way to set it up so it does it whilst recording in the best possible way rather than turning the quality slider down? because that makes it look terrible and still quite a heafty size even when its set way down to even %50

cheers

Also, don't know if this is the right section of the forum to be posting in, but I guess its to do with the gpu and afterburner so I figured it should go here :p

If you can use Raptr's DVR or Geforce Experience's Shadow play. When I was recording I found Shadowplay was much more efficient at recording than anything that MSI Afterburner had to offer.

You can play about with using the dedicated hardware on your intel cpu or amd/nvidia graphics card within afterburner by selecting "external plugin" under "video format". I don't have any experience with this as I stopped recording before the feature was added.

If you want your CPU do do the work with AB the best codec I found was x264vfw. Download and install it then select VFW compression in afterburner. Click the ellipsis next to that and select "x264vfw" and then configure. A lot of the settings I left on default as I was unsure as to what they did but I changed preset to "ultrafast" and Rate control to "Single pass - bitrate-based (ABR)" and changed the bitrate to about 20000.

This will leave you with quite small files and not a huge CPU overhead. Quality won't be perfect but it makes a negligible difference once youtube compression has had it's way with your final video.

Just tried using MSI AB with nvsync on my 780 and it really chugged performance. There was a 30% FPS drop and even though mins were still above my monitor's refresh rate it felt quite stuttery. I haven't compared it to x264vfw yet.

Would not recommend personally.

I just tried x264 codek thingy on the settings you said, the file size has dropped from around 1gb for 60 seconds to around 80mb, that's fantastic, but the resolution has gone strange, and whats even weirder when I click details of the video it doesn't show me what resolution it is lol.

im trying to record 1080, but it looks more like 1700x800? hmm

If you have amd raptr installed and also amd GPUs inside msi afterburner you can use AMDs VCE this will give you raptr performance and decent image quality and you also get lower file sizes..

Least in my testing so far.

alright cheers shankly, ill also give that a try after iv had dinner :) ill be back in 20 mins or so to try it out.

iv installed amd gaming evolved raptr thingy, and I cant see this amd codek in the AB's compression list?

Where am I going wrong lol

I think the best one for me is that x264 codec but I cant get it to record in 1080 res, any idea what im doing wrong with it?

Have you tried both full size and manually selecting 1080p under frame size? I cannot remember having any issues with recording 1440p with x264vfw.

Yep tried both 1080 and full frame and it comes out squashed like extra wide screen with x264vfw

Okay so the verdict is,

x264vfw, records fantastic, simple to use, but it outputs a video at around 16:7, at around 1700x700 or something stupid? no idea why, hopefully one of you can fix this for me lol

the amd codec only can record in mkv format not avi, and them are my only two options, so I cant use that as my sony vegas wont open mkv files.

So right now im stuck using the stock mpeg one on afterburner again unfortunately, but iv downloaded handbrake to see what that's about

Edit, just managed to convert a few MKV files to mp4 with handbrake, its done a nice job.

I think ill just have to stick to the regular old way of having a huge mpeg file then compressing it in sony vegas rather than compressing it whilst recording due to the problems I have with trying to compress whilst recording. which is a shame, the x264 codec really did a good job at file size and quality and I had the smallest fps drop with it, but it wont output a 1920x1080 video for me and iv no idea why.
