What’s the best sim solution here? Phone & cellular watch

My boy will be getting his first phone imminently. It’s an iPhone SE (2020). He will also be getting a cellular Apple Watch to go with it.

He won’t always have the phone with him, so the watch will require a connection so that he can contact us. Is it just a case of getting two sim only contracts, or can I get one sim for the phone and get the watch to piggyback off it?

Any guidance on the cheapest and most effective solution would be much appreciated.

You can't piggy back off a phone SIM, if your watch is 4g, when I last checked.
You'll need a SIM for that too, normally an esim.
When my missus had a Vodafone contract on her phone, around £50 for phone and SIM, they wanted £8 a month still for the watch esim.

That was a while ago, so prices may have dropped.
