Whats the best value for money gaming router?

Im looking for a gaming router as my free router that came from BE doest have the option to forward ports and dmz is disabled :mad:

Anyway when it comes to routers i havent a clue whats good and whats dire, and which are the makes to avoid.

All i need the router to do is have wireless (any wireless will do only flate mate uses wireless for surfing)

Also be able prioritise gaming trafic so my flat mates torrents dont lag me.

My prise range is up to aproximatly £100


And another question i have is that do better routers get a faster and more stable internet connection? and if so how much better? as the crap router i have at the minute tends to lose connection occasionaly.

u can only forward ports that are programed into the router. so it has about 20 popular games u can forward. It has the option to put in custom ports, but if u do it doesnt open them for some crappy reason. so when i tryed to forward sup com ports they didnt. i spent ages trying to find out what i was doing wrong and got serveral people to rey help me. then i hit BE fourms and found out its the routers falt ><.

its a thomson tg585v7. its a fault with vertion 7 of the firmware... and ofcoure BE made it so u cant upate or roleback the firmwear. Seach the web for this roputer all u will find is people saying "ports wont forward".

Anyway this is a bit offtopic as i dont want a fix for this router as its dire anyway.

Not that I've tried it myself, my TG585v7 is running in bridge mode with a proper router, but the option's certainly there.


On topic.. most people will probably suggest a Netgear DG834GT, since its Broadcom chipset plays nicely with Be/O2 kit. Personally my O2 box does fine in bridge mode, then you can use something semi-decent like a Linksys WRT54GL for the routing and QoS.
 
You shouldn't need port forwarding with NAT, and I'd be very careful with DMZ option as it opens your machine unnecessarily to DOS.

Also if your router is disconnecting, most likely due to a filtering or line quality problem, I've never seen a "bad" router, even the oldest ones are pretty solid.

Change your filter, if it's still disconnecting do a line test with BE to find out where the problem is. If you're dead set on a new router then get this one...

Well in theory you shouldn't. Some really old games still need ports forwarded but that's pretty dam rare, anything in the past 4 years shouldn't need it. Just remember to turn of upnp, don't use dmz unless you really know what you're doing.

Neatgears Dgs are solid routers, i've got an original gt that's still running, but that lacks traffic prioritisation. Given that's you're quite vague or rather, that you don't specifically need N or gigabyte, if i were you i'd buy an older wrt (about £40, just make sure you get a right version) and flash it with tomato. Will do everything you need and then some.

Oh and "better routers" don't get better connections, it's the chip sets that determine the speed and generally speaking, the broadcoms are faster.
 
It's strategy games that sometimes need NAT as someone needs to act as a server or they use a P2P model, Companies of Heroes and Supreme Commander are amongst them.

Supreme Commander supports UPnP I believe, tried that?
 
Yeh it was the supreme commander ports i was trying to forward u need them open as every play needs to be connected individually to every other player as there is no server.

the ports for supcom are
6112
9103
30350 - 30351

and no they don't open!!! trust me! Other people that have that router and try to play supcom cant, the only solution is a new router as DMZ is disabled on the router and the firmware cant be changed.
