What's the best way to remove baked on tar?

I have a white car with pearlescent paint and the sides are covered in baked on tar. I've tried autoglimm intensive tar remover, wd40 and something else unbranded.

Nothing really works and I have to use my nails to scrape each spot off. If I went round every spot with my nail. I'd be there for days literally.

Is there some sort of brush or product or even equipment I can use to get all this off?

P.S. tips on general car cleaning would be good to, I'm hopeless!!!

Thanks very much.

Petrol actually does work really well. You have to be really gentle mind and wash the area straight after.

Autosmart Tardis is a great product - used it for the first time last week and it got tar off a 9 year old car that had been there for years. If you're getting some Autosmart products, G101 All Purpose Cleaner is good too - cleaned the engine bay up a treat diluted 10:1.

I've used petrol and WD40 successfully in the past on tar too.

With tar you are best to apply the solvent and leave it for a few minutes to soften it, then wipe it away.

Ah I may have a crack at the bike exhaust tomorrow if I can locate the wd40. And the engine. And the rest of the bike!
