I bet no matter how careful you try to be, you'll still cut into the paint. Don't try this at all tbh.
Clay bar won't work either, I'd go for tardis, it's a tried and tested product. WD40 in my experience leaves an oily residue on the paint which is hard to remove and will show up every time it's wet.
A mate told me a while ago that butter is good for this, a tip from his father who used to work on the roads hence lots of tar. Never tried it so it could be a wind up.
