whats the cheapest way to set up a server ?

i have just got my media player working after a week trying to get it networked to my pc.

i am now looking for a cheap server to have sitting in the corner with all my files on so i dont have to turn my pc on to watch a film/video.

i have a p180 sitting in the loft but i think thats a bit to big to be honest.

how cheap is it to go down another route for a quite server that i can turn on when needed to view my files.

i think ill need at least 2tb of storage to start with.

sorry if this is a bit noobish but im just starting out and want to get my house networked up to watch films any where in the house at a later date.

setting up my media player was a good learning curve and i now know how to set it all up.

1. get the smallest pc, e.g. a mac mini, a revo, or similar.
2. Plug in USB2 2TB drive
3. ?????
4. Profit

any idea what's a good one or are they all the same in description.

ill probably be after a dual hdd enclosure that can support 4tb.
