Hi all,
I've got a lenovo laptop from work (can't remember the specs or model off the top of my head). I use it with a dock for connecting to wired network, monitors, power, keyboard, etc., both at home and at work.
I usually put it to sleep at the end of the day but often wonder if it's better to set sleep first or disconnect from the dock first.
Anyone know what is best or if it matters?

I wouldn't think it matters. With some of the older docks you needed to close the lid to get easier access to the release buttons, those were the docks where the laptop would clip in to a dock and you could lock it with a key :)

Now I'm thinking if you put a laptop to sleep and disconnect from the dock, if the laptop wakes before being re-connected is Windows expecting all the connected peripherals to still be present.

The Thunderbolt \ USB-C docks are designed to pull out a single cable at a desk and take your laptop with you to a meeting. Windows should be able to handle losing connection to a display, network and peripherals and switch to the onboard devices.

I've never trusted a laptop in a bag in sleep mode, too many times I removed a laptop to find it is out of sleep mode, low battery and cooking. That was years ago, power management would have improved by now but I always power down.

I have Microsoft Surface laptops through work and I've had real issues with power, sleep, hibernate, as Mujja says, low battery backpack drama etc.

I have a pretty specific routine now - never hibernate the machine while it's plugged in. So for me it's disconnect dock, hit power button for hibernate. I even do it before the laptop has registered the disconnect, and after a few seconds it catches up and hibernates. Seems to be fine now. When I would hibernate it plugged in I'd sometimes come back to a laptop that had switched off without shutting down.
