a friend of mine is after a car, she wrote off the previous one in April this year.

she has £4k to spend and wants a safe hatchback, relatively quick etc.

after seeing my ancient golf that refuses to die, she wants a golf and has been looking at the mk4 2.0 gti :D (i laughed too..)

i recon for her that a tdi (130) would be better than the silly gti and that the 1.8 turbo gti would be too much hassle as she wont be interested in having the extra power.

i doubt a 130 tdi will fit in the budget, but thats the engine id like to get for her as ive had lot of those in the past and theyre better than the 115 (for a few reasons)

i suggested a Bora, its the same as a golf, has a boot and costs less.

do the foci fall into this catagory? (would have to be tdci). are they robust when they get to 150k miles also? how do the interiors wear?

cheers

TDCi Foci for 4k is do-able but will be high milage, and 150k is when they start getting expesnive. Interiors dont wear too bad.

Does she want a diesel? because if I only had around £4k I would be looking at 1.8 / 2.0 litre petrols.

well the insurance quotes she has got are for mk4 golf diesels, i asked her if thats what she wanted and she confirmed etc.

are the diesel foci a significant premium over the 1.8-2.0 petrol versions then?

Id have to have the facelift one, the 1st one is probably a city driven only car, probs full of sqweaks and ratles too.

another silly question.. what are these like to work on? if she got a diesel golf, it would be a case of 'the devil you know'. i know the issues they have and i know how to prevent them.

is there much that goes wrong with the newish ford engines? does it have OBD that will tell me which sensor is dead?

Ford petrol engines are usually cheap and easy to fix. The TDCi's can be expesnive to fix, depends what goes wrong, Turbo's cost £700 exluding labour..
