when i installed adium, it installed something called growl which seems to have got its way into a few programs...

it seems quite a good little program, so i was wondering if there is a way to see if there are other programs it can interract with? its got its claws into skype, transmission, and adium so far... i guess it just looks every now and then for compatible apps? is that right?

by the way, i have set it to not start on boot, but every time the bugger's there, anyone know why? something to do with GrowlMenu or is that summat different?

it is a notification program, works with anything compatible.

Growl is one reason why I love OS X. It tells you when a download is complete, when a torrent file is downloaded, when an email is received (and whether it's worth firing Mail open), when FTP is done, when new RSS articles are added, plus loads more.

Click on System Prefs and then Growl to see which of your programs it interacts with.

does it automatically link itself with Mail and Quicksilver and the like? i had those installed and Growl didn't have em in the programs list?

(also, does anyone know what the GrowlMenu is? its in my startup programs do i need it? i like as quick a startup as poss you see... there seems to be growl menu and summat else which i'm guessing is the main body of the app...)

Tell me more on them please;

In the download folder of Growl there is an extra's folder, you'll need to download it again to get this, in there, there is all sorts of nice stuff. :)

(Possibly Mail and Quicksilver stuff)

I tried Growl once, found it to be annoying and pointless.

I know when a download is finished, and when my iPhone is synced, and when I have a new mail.. popping up in the corner/centre just annoyed me, so I deleted it.

If you have other uses then it can be good, I just didn't see it's relevance (for me).

I only really use Growl for IM notifications.

It's probably worth pointing out that its totally customisable so you can turn on and off the notifications you don't want.
