¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I produce music in my bedroom using normal hifi speakers and an amp - I've been tempted to get some studio monitors but they are pricey to say the least.

What are the main differences between studio monitors and hifi speakers?

studio monitors are designed to produce the flattest most linear responce curve from about 30hz up to 18Khz so that when recording and editing the sound is produced the closest it can be to the live music.

hifi speakers are designed to sound good.

Virtually all 'studio' monitors are tuned so give a balanced frequency response in the nearfield IE sitting close to them. HiFi speakers are designed to sound better when sitting further away.

So Studio monitors make great PC speakers where you sit a couple of feet from them, but HiFi speakers make better Cinema speakers, where your more likely to be a decent distance away from screen & speakers.
