Apologies, I'm definitely more of an end user than a techy - but any help gratefully appreciated!

I'm looking at purchasing a new machine - nothing too fancy - but I don't want something that is useless either!

My current machine is a dell inspiron 9100 P4 3.6 etc... and up until recently was working brilliantly - its now throwing a clot every time I start it up and shut it down... I've switched the memory to no avail... as its out of warranty, I thought it was time to get rid!

Although, I'd like to build my own machine - at the moment I havent got £1000 to spend in one go! Mortgage to pay and all that... so...

I've seen a *waits for flames!* another Dell machine, a desktop this time which appears to suit my needs... moderately high spec.. but I'm puzzled...

If i select a Viiv C2D i'm unable to select Windows XP Professional (which I'd prefer over vista for the meantime anyway) or... if I select XP Media Centre I can have either the C2D or the Viiv C2D...

I suppose, what I'm asking is.. what is the difference between Viiv and C2D??

The spec I'm looking at is C2D 2.4GHZ , 2GB ram, 500 gb hdd (2 * 250) with an ATI Radeon X1300 Pro..

I do a lot of CAD in work for which i use my precision workstation (i think I'm a dell salesman!) which is specced up to the nines - but as my current system will run the latest release of AutoCad / 3DSM i have no reason not to think that this new system couldn't last a few years?

Anyway - apologies for EXTREMELY long post - any advice would be great...

In the meantime, I'll do a search in software for vista vs xp and see what comes up..

Cheers,

Tom

As far as I know there is no difference between C2Duo and Viiv C2Duo.

Viiv is just the technology that makes C2Duo what it is, my guess is Dell have included "Viiv" in the name to just make it sound more glamorous.

By the way, if you don't mind me asking, how much do you have to spend?

Thanks... I kind of assumed something like that - especially because the code number E6600 was the same!

I'm looking at somewhere between £600-£800, although I'm going to get it on finance... I just havent got the money to spend in one go!

Cheers,

Tom

Viiv is basically the desktop equivalent of Centrino i.e. a specification for the entire platform (CPU, chipset, network/wireless etc.). Whether it says Viiv or not, it's still a Core 2 :).

The only reason Viiv is plastered everywhere is for marketing purposes. All conroe chips (Core 2 Duo) have Viiv
