What's the fastest 5G download speed you've seen in UK

The reason for my question is a recent experience on a holiday to Mexico. Long story short my iPhone got stolen and I had to buy a Motorola phone with a pre-paid 5G SIM card from a local operator called Telcel. I noticed that web sites and YouTube load crazy fast, although the phone is an old model from 2022. So I Googled "measure internet speed" and Google's own speed meter showed 3.8Gbits download! I tried fast.com and it showed 3.9Gbps. Later I tried to measure the speed a few more times and often it will go up to 4.2 - 4.3Gbps. The fastest speed I've seen in UK is 6xx Mbps...

So I'm wondering what is your experience with 5G internet. Have you seen some crazy speeds in UK or abroad? And do you think UK is now behind the world in mobile tech?

Not on my phone, but my 5G router at home managed 1.2GBit a few times. In early 2022, the router had to be upstairs and on a window sill to get a decent speed. By mid-2022, I was able to move the router downstairs on a coffee table with curtains drawn and still get good speeds.

This is using a Three sim on the unlimited data plan for £17/month.

What sort of ping are you getting with that?

@henry hoov3r - speedtest.net just given me 27ms (latency), 390mbit up, 25mbit down. Outskirts of Stafford.

That’s decent. I remember about 7 years ago i had a 4G dongle as the internet in the place i moved to was apparently really slow around 2 MBPS. The Dongle was fast enough at the time,around 20 MBPS but the latency was quite high over 100ms.

I am on EE with an S22 ultra and it seems any time it goes to 5G, I have barely any internet at all! On the occasion it does work, though, I have seen 400 mbps

I have 5G home broadband with three and regularly get over 700MB highest was 999 when i first got it

Not bad for £22 a month and i have taken it away on holiday as well which has been great

If you don’t use calls or texts, get onto the £5 a month data sims(when that deal comes around) think it’s a business sim. Most I get around here is 250/30
