picked up a computer for £5 as its old and needed a psu/hdd, it has an Asus P5N-E SLI, q6600, 2gb ram, 8500gt, after having to apply fresh paste and fiddle with the stock cooler it seems to be working, so want to put it to use for now anyways as i have a £5 worth of Icute cube case to fix up and build a system in it which doesnt take atx, but i will want to keep the quad.

anyways this topic isnt so much about my purpose, i just want to know what would pair well with this quad that is of a decent performance.

I honestly wouldn't go with anything beyond a GTX780/290 even then you'd see a fair drop in performance at times compared to a more recent CPU.

thanks for replies.

while i wasnt asking what to get as such, a 1070 cost more than both my computers worth lol and so be a waste, i want the 1030 for my lenovo as its the best modern that system will take, my actual gaming is at 1366x768 as while my TV is a 1080p screen, for pc use its native is the lower res which is fine by me and depending on the game i usually play at high settings, so for a 2nd system id be looking at medium range of cards, but then im still not playing demanding games anyways and want to play my oldies.

okay so the 770/290 would be the maximum to pair up that will decrease performance somewhat(i dont edit or anything anymore), but what would be the actual perfect match range of cards that wouldnt bottleneck at all? ignore the ram of that system(probably only takes 4gb anyways), i didnt buy it to leave it as it come.

Total depends on the resolution if you mean for gaming and depends on the task if you're looking for compute. Although I'd assume you would know what you needed for compute.

For gaming at 5mp or over the sky is the limit, although you will need more than 4gb of system memory for most games at any resolution. Ideally 8gb minimum.

Once you crank up ingame settings and resolution the Q6600 actually still holds its own against a 4770K, Gaming wise, Not tasks such as rendering videos though.

Although I wouldn't really go passed something like a 1070, At that point you really do need a more modern CPU to compliment your GPU :)

I don't think this is true, a Q6600 is definitely not going to "hold its own" against the 4770k. If it was a 2600k then I would agree, but the Q6600 is very old now (I have one in my old PC).

the 1366x768 i quoted is the res i run at because thats its native for my tv when connected to a computer, so looks better than forcing 1920x1080 which doesnt fit anything, so my res wont change and yeah i know what id need for general computer usage, my lenovo is more than enough for that, the purpose of the quad is to build a decent machine round it that could do some mid gaming as well as general, but will also be my storage system as it holds more drives also my testing system, i am limited to what i can do with my lenovo and for a fiver, the quad seems a worthy gamble to own one again. i am only assuming the board supports 4gb as most ive had was that limit, i havent bothered to google it, but i dont really plan to keep it atx for long.

if i thought it was justifiable to remove the i3 from my lenovo i would buy another 1150 board as i know what will run nicely with that so i wouldnt need this thread, but i really like my lenovo as it is and never had a q6600 long enough in the past.

You're gaming at lower resolution therefore your CPU will hold back whichever GPU you buy. Why not do some testing to see how the CPU performs in the games you want to play at the chosen resolution just now? If the CPU is currently holding back your 8500GT then what makes you think a more powerful card would make any difference?
