Whats the max temp i can take a E8400 to?

When stress testing I wouldn't like to see it above 70 deg C, and for normal use i'd say around 60 deg C max is reasonable. The voltage the chip needs will dictate somewhat the heat produced, C0 are not as good clockers as E0, but I imagine at least 3.6 should be attainable on a half decent chip.

The AC7 might need an upgrade, but will depend on ambient temps and case cooling too, so give it a shot first, you can always purchase a TRUE and fan later on should you need better cooling.
 
Yup have tried and tried mate but just cant get it stable . Its not down to temps though I think its just because I'm using nforce chipset motherboard. I feel it would go higher on a P45 or something like But I like my sli setup and to be honest 4ghz is more than enough for me :)
 
Well I cant help you with settings sorry but I'm sure somebody else will :) BUT I'm pretty sure you should beat my clock with that board providing your RAM can handle it

Back in my days of overclocking, 60C was considered the boundary!!!

Personally, with my old (and now sold E6600) I kept it under 60 @ 3.456GHz.

With my Mac Pro and 2.66Ghz I7 I keep it under 70C (but core sensor temp).
 
65°C @ Full Prime Small FFTs Load is a good place to either stop or improve your cooling! :p

If Prime Smalls reaches that temp you just know IBT is gonna hit 70°C-75°C

I used to aim for 55°C Prime/65°C IBT but I just felt the chip was having it to easy, plus the fact that in actual real world useage I never really say temps higher than 48°C :D

I suppose we need to remind ourselves that Prime and Orthos are technicians tools and do some real world tests using our favourite apps or games, I dare so there are a few of you guys that encode or render that see increased temps in line with Prime Smalls! ;)

It's also worth remembering to build in an allowance for the natural ambient rise due to a burning hot summer bringing a possible extra 20°C down on your poor system! :eek:

[edit] just to add apart from the question of decreasing hardware lifespan which is debatable TBH another good reason to want cooler hardware is I believe it will clock better! :cool:
