Just what the thread title says, what do developers mean when they say a game/mod is the vanilla version?
Just wondering if somone can clarify this for me please.

Cheers

I believe Vanilla refers to as Plain... as in vanilla icecream being 'standard/plain icecream'.

It can also be used by very kind tutors to describe a particularly dull or boring piece of work :p

Vanilla BF2 is out the box no add ons, map packs etc. Just BF2 out the box & patched up. I'd take Vanilla as the Original version.

Sarcasm? I always thought it was called vanilla ice cream because it is meant to taste of vanilla

yes.. but vanilla in terms of games refers to standard / plain. Everyone thinks of vanilla as being the plainest ice cream.. or the one you expect to get if something was just listed as ice cream. :)

(even though vanilla ice-cream is actually not that plain if you get a good one)
